EWL Joint Action with the Council of Europe: "Act Against Rape! Use the Istanbul Convention!"

[Brussels, 13 November 2013] The European Women’s Lobby (EWL) is happy to share with you the Action Kit for the project “Act against rape! Use the Istanbul Convention!”, a joint project with the Council of Europe (CoE). The aim of the project is to promote the Istanbul Convention by raising awareness on the positive changes it can bring with a special focus on sexual violence, including rape.

This Action Kit aims at helping the EWL members organisations to coordinate the events at country level, keeping coherence among all the events as part of the joint EWL – CoE project.

This Action Kit provides practical and user friendly information on:

  • Key messages
  • Information and Resources, including facts and figures
  • Information for the organisation of the events
  • Tips and recommendations to build up alliances for the event
  • Ideas for communication and media
  • Tools: templates for visual identity, press release and reporting.

in the view of this Action Kit, EWL member organisations are preparing a series of public events that will take place all over Europe to mark the 16 Days of Activism against Violence against Women between 25 November and 10 December.

Several events will already take place in November:

The first event of the project will take place in France on Monday 18th November at the premises of the French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby.The president of the Delegation on women’s rights and equal opportunities in the Senate, Brigitte Gonthier-Maurin, and the president of the Feminist Association "Contre le Viol", Emmanuelle Piet, will attend the event together with several politicians, and experts from the EWL Observatory on Violence against Women.

Shortly after, on the 22 of November in Bulgaria, the National Coordinator of Women’s Lobby is organising a discussion with institutions and NGOs; with the support of Bulgarian Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs. They will also do an action: NGOs representatives will stay with balloons and poster in front of the Parliament with slogan "Istanbul Convention - Ratify it now!

On the 25th November, events will be organised in Croatia, Denmark and Sweden to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

In Croatia, The Center for Women War Victims, ROSA is organising the event together with the Parliamentary Committee for Gender Equality at the Croatian Parliament.

The Women’s Council in Denmark together with the Women’s Museum are organising a public meeting in Aarhus that will be focused on sexual violence against women with a focus on counseling, campaigns and prevention.

On the same day in Sweden the Swedish Women’s Lobby will hold a talk about rape. The event will start with a screening of the short film “Porn Damaged” by Roxane von Gerber Hedayat and Moa Kjellstrand. This is followed by a panel discussion about rape culture, sexism and how Sweden’s ratification of the Istanbul Convention can be used in the fight against rape.

On the 27 of November, in Portugal, the Association of Women against Violence (AMCV) will held an event at the auditory of the Portuguese Parliament with the support of the Commission for Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.
