EWL says EU’s financial framework must be gender sensitive

[Brussels, 24 March 2011] The EWL requires more targeted financing for fundamental rights, social justice and equality between women and men, and a gender responsive approach to the future EU financial framework in a high level hearing.

The EWL spoke on 21 March in high-level hearing on the next EU multi-annual financial framework organized by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) where civil society organizations had a possibility to exchange views with the EU Commissioner responsible for Budget, Janusz Lewandowski.

The EWL also submitted amendments to the draft European Parliament report on the future of EU’s finances.

The EWL requires that the next EU financial framework must be transparent and accountable, and reflect the values and objectives of the Lisbon Treaty, including fundamental human rights, equality between women and men, and social justice.

Th EWL also stresses that the next financial framework must be gender sensitive, and proposes that the drafting of the next MFF is a possibility to conduct a gender analysis of European budgetary processes and to introduce gender budgeting methods at the EU level.

European Commission will present its views on the next multi-annual financial framework on 29 June. European Parliament will adopt its position in late April or early May.
