Estonian members support women in Spain and the right to abortion in Europe

[Tallinn, 25 January 2014] On the occasion of the conference celebrating ten years of action of the Estonian Women’s Associations Roundtable (EWAR), all participants, from EWAR member organisations, gathered for a group photo to take part to the European week of action to support women in Spain and the right to abortion in Europe.

More than 100 women, together with several decision-makers and representatives from governmental and university authorities, took a group picture with the sign “Women decide”, in support to the situation in Spain, where women risk losing their right to abortion. In Estonia, the right to abortion is anchored in the constitution and fortunately not discussed. But in the context of growing conservatism and attacks on women’s rights, EWAR members wanted to take a stance and make an action to support women in Spain.

Since December, a proposal of law, tabled by the Spanish Government, proposes to restrict the right to abortion to women in very specific cases, therefore denying their right to decide about their life. The EWL would like to recall all opponents to the right to abortion, that women’s empowerment is directly linked to women’s economic independence, gender equality and the realization of women’s rights as a whole.
On 1st February, a Train of Liberty will bring women’s demands to the Madrid government. Support them by organizing also an action in your country!

Thank you to all EWAR members and partners for their solidarity!
