Greek Conference on the 50/50 Campaign Equal Participation of men and women in the elections of the European Parliament and Local Elections

[Brussels, 9 May 2014] The Coordination of Greek Women’s NGOS , a member of the European Women’s Lobby, held a conference on the subject of Parity Democracy with regards to the upcoming elections by the end of April. This event took place in the Offices of the European Parliament in Athens and aimed at raising awareness for the importance of these elections, and at highlighting the special issue of equal representation in political decision-making.

The Greek Minister of Internal Affairs, the General Secretary of Social Affairs, the Head of the European Parliament Office in Athens, Greek and European Parliamentarians, candidates for the elections from all the parties agreed on the urgent need to mobilise European Citizens, especially women, to vote in the very important May elections.

Women candidates used the opportunity to present their priorities and show their engagement in the promotion of women’s rights and gender equality, against gender-based violence, as well as the promotion of women’s social and economic independence.

Mika Ioannidou, Head of the Coordination of Greek Women’s NGOS and Board Member of the EWL, furthermore talked about the work of the EWL and stressed the need to vote for women and candidates that are committed to gender equality: “The European Union is a key player for Democracy and Social change. Women today are very well educated and represent a complete pool of talents, new ideas and dynamism”.
