Step it UP - by 2030!

[Brussels, 23 September 2015] The European Women’s Lobby co-wrote a Civil Societies Open Letter to Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmersmans on the 2030 Agenda.. "As European civil society, we now expect the EU to match the ambition of this Agenda with a clear EU implementation strategy, which reflects the integrated, interlinked and comprehensive nature of the Agenda, in order to ensure well-being for all within planetary boundaries."

At the same time UN Women are mobilising for 27 September 2015.

WHAT? For the first time in history Heads of State and Government will announce commitments to achieve gender equality…
by 2030!

CALL ON YOUR GOVERNMENT TO MAKE COMMITMENTS THAT ARE:
IRREVERSIBLE. SUSTAINABLE. TRANSFORMATIVE.

The commitments can be related to:
 Investing in gender equality at the national and international levels;
 Updating/establishing new action plans, strategies and policies on gender equality;
 Enhancing women’s leadership and participation at all levels of decision-making;
 New laws or reviewing and implementing existing ones to promote gender equality;
 Preventing and addressing social norms and stereotypes that condone gender inequality, discrimination and violence;
 Launching public mobilization and national campaigns to promote gender equality; and
 Committing to ensuring a safe and enabling environment at all levels for NGOs, civil society organizations, women’s organizations, and human rights defenders;

Commitments can also be focused on thematic areas including:
 Eliminating violence against women and girls
 Eliminating harmful practices
 Recognizing unpaid care work and establishing measures that promote shared responsibility
 Ensuring equal participation for leadership and decision making at all levels
 Ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights
 Ensuring equal access to economic resources
 Enhancing the use of technology to promote gender equality
 Engaging men and boys to achieve gender equality
