EC unveils the new composition of the EU Group of Experts on Trafficking in Human Beings

[Brussels, 09 February 2012] The EU Group of Experts on Trafficking in Human Beings was set up by the European Commission in 2003. The third group of experts, nominated for 2011-201%, is composed of 15 members representing a wide range of expertise in all the aspects of anti-trafficking policies. The expert group is representative and balanced in terms of institutional background and geographic regions. The aim of the group is to provide the European Commission with expertise in the shape of opinions and reports relating to the prevention of and the fight against trafficking in human beings.

The EWL is happy to see that some experts will for sure bring a gender perspective into the work of the group:

  • Ms Ann Hamilton, currently General Manager of the Human Trafficking Foundation, United Kingdom, used to be Head of Equality and Women’s services for Glasgow Community and Safety Services and developed the Glasgow Routes Out of Prostitution partnership.
  • Ms Josie Christodoulou, currently Policy Coordinator at the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS), Cyprus, coordinates various projects related to gender and migration, integration, and trafficking in women for the purpose of sexual and labour exploitation.
  • Ms Viviana Waisman, currently Executive director and co-founder of Women’s Link Worldwide, Spain, leads and participates in investigations, litigation and trainings in numerous fields such as: migrant women’s rights, trafficking, international gender crimes, intersectional discrimination and reproductive rights, among others.

The EWL is looking forward to the work of the Group of Experts and hopes that civil society organizations will continue to be consulted.

In September 2011, the EWL took part in consultation meetings with the EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator. In October 2011 the EWL delivered a briefing on the gendered nature of trafficking in human beings.
