Feminists from all over Europe gather for European Women’s Lobby General Assembly 2024
[Brussels, 22 April 2024] The recent General Assembly of the European Women’s Lobby (EWL), held from 19-21 April 2024 in Bucharest, marked a significant moment in the ongoing fight for equality between women and men and women’s rights across Europe. Hosted in collaboration with the Romanian Women’s Lobby, this gathering brought together members from all corners of Europe to strategise, collaborate, and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.
EWL members came together once again to address pressing issues and shape the direction of our collective efforts. The Board meeting on 19 April set the stage for a productive few days, as members approved the application of a new EWL member from Norway, expanding our reach to 34 European countries and 17 EU-wide organisations. This expansion reaffirms our commitment to amplifying the voices and experiences of women from diverse backgrounds across Europe.
In addition to administrative matters, the EWL members also partook in a public event on feminist peacemaking and the outlook for the European Elections 2024. This event highlighted meaningful discussions on the intersection of feminism, peace and politics, emphasising the crucial role that women play in shaping inclusive and sustainable societies.
At the General Assembly itself, members came together to approve the work plan and budget for 2025, ensuring that our advocacy efforts remain focused and impactful in the years to come. The adoption of the new Young Women Engagement Plan and Inclusion, Diversity, and Equality Plan underscored our commitment to fostering a more inclusive and representative movement.
One of the most poignant moments of the Assembly was the approval of an emergency motion calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and a sustainable, feminist peace process between the Israeli and Palestinian people. This motion reflects our unwavering commitment to promoting peace, justice, and equality for all, and our belief that women must be central to any meaningful peace negotiations.
Finally, the Assembly concluded with a resounding call to action in support of the adoption of the first-ever EU Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence. This historic milestone represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to eradicate violence and discrimination against women and girls, both online and offline.
As we reflect on the achievements of the General Assembly, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all EWL members for their participation, dedication, and unwavering commitment to women’s rights.
